“I’m just really thankful to be on my way to Beijing instead of being on my couch to watch the Games,” said Crocker, who starred in a documentary, “Unfiltered,” about his rivalry with Phelps.
Crocker was a member of the world-record-setting 4x100 medley relay teams that won gold in Sydney in 2000 and in Athens in 2004. He also won a bronze medal in 2004 as a member of the 4x100 freestyle relay and silver in the 100 butterfly, losing to Phelps by 0.04 of a second.
The 25-year-old Crocker, born in Portland, Me., was a 22-time N.C.A.A. all-American at the University of Texas. He trains with Aaron Peirsol and Brendan Hansen at Texas Aquatics under Texas Coach Eddie Reese.
Crocker has played guitar since the eighth grade, counting Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn as his influences. His favorite musician is Bob Dylan. He also likes classic cars; one of the first he purchased was a 1971 Buick Riviera.
